Chilean agriculture expert Professor Francisco visited the Jilin Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs on July 28.

Professor Francisco is an expert in quinoa, and has taken part in several research projects on quinoa cultivation. He came to Jilin to provide technical guidance for a quinoa development company in Changchun.

He and the company discussed the future of quinoa cultivation in Jilin province. Quinoa was introduced to Jilin very late but experienced fast development there. More and more people know about quinoa and it has a huge potential market. The plant was first grown in the Changbaishan Mountain area and then promoted to other parts of Jilin. Professor Francisco hopes to promote quinoa in more countries and to more people. He hopes that Jilin will lead the development of quinoa in China.

Quinoa was first planted in the Andes in South America. It has a history of more than 5,000 years, and is one of the ten healthiest foods listed by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Jilin province has been growing quinoa in recent years, and has established a base for its introduction and cultivation.
