Members of the committee will mainly be international friends who have won the "Friendship Award", established by the Chinese government for foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the country's economic and social development.

Led by Gilbert Van Kerckhove, the first committee will have 20 members, seven of whom will be on standing committees. As one of the first foreigners to be granted a permanent residence permit in China, Van Kerckhove will use the committee as a platform to work for a brighter future of the Belt and Road Initiative.
