Vice Minister CHENG Jinpei met with Nobel Prize Winning Chemist George Olah, also Dean ofLocker Hydrocarbon Research Institute, Department of Chemistry, University of Southern California and Peter J.Stang, member of National Academy of Sciences and Editor in chief of the Journal of the American Chemical Society at MOST on the afternoon of July 24, 2007. They visited China at the invitation of the Institute of Chemistry, CAS.

VM CHENG introduced China’s basic research work and S&T efforts to address energy and environmental problems. George Olah briefed on the study of the production of methanol directly from fossil fuel resources and by recycling of carbon dioxide via hydrogenative reduction. He presented VM CHEM his book Beyond Oil and Gas: the Methanol Economy as a gift.
