MOST and Huaneng Group Exchange Information on “Green Coal-Based Power Generation”

On the afternoon of 7 August 2007, ZHANG Zhihong, Deputy Director-General of the Department of High and New Technology Development and Industrialization of MOST listened to the report of Huaneng Group on its “Green Coal-Based Power Generation” plan.

Based on the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), the green coal-based power generation system mainly generates power by the combined cycle of gasification-based hydrogen production, hydrogen-powered turbine and fuel cell and conducts CO2 separation and processing. Developing and making good use of this technology will greatly increase the efficiency of coal-based power generation and achieve near-zero emissions of pollutants and CO2 so as to realize sustainable development of coal-based power generation.

Statistics show that the thermal power installed capacity of our country accounts for 77.8% of the total. Traditional coal-based power generation technology is disadvantageous to energy saving and brings severe pollution to the environment. Therefore, the development of green coal-based power generation technology today is of great significance to energy saving and emission reduction.
