China-US Fossil Energy Protocol Meeting Held in Beijing

 

 

The 2013 China-US Fossil Energy Protocol Meeting was convened in Beijing on September 23rd. Bilateral talks were held between Mr. Cao Jianlin, Vice Minister of Science and Technology of China and Mr. Chris Smith, Assistant Secretary of the US Department of Energy. The Meeting was jointly hosted by coordinator on the Chinese side, Mr. Chen Jiachang, Deputy Director General of Department of High and New Technology Development and Industrialization, and the Coordinator on the US side, Mr. Chris Smith.


Vice Minister Cao remarked that under the framework of China-US Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement signed in 1979, politicians, entrepreneurs, universities and research institutes of the two countries have carried out sound cooperation in wide-ranging S&T areas, including energy. Under the Fossil Energy Protocol, the two countries have conducted fruitful cooperation in power system, clean fuels, petroleum and natural gas, energy and environmental control technology, climate science, as well as technology of coal-based energy system. All this has played an important role in facilitating bilateral cooperation.


Chris Smith pointed out that US-China fossil energy cooperation was one of the most successful examples of cooperation between the US and other countries in this field, and it has brought about new chances of substantive cooperation in trade and energy. He also looked forward to more efforts and new achievements in the industrialization of fossil energy technology.
At this meeting, participants of all annexes introduced the working progress, and coordinators of both sides signed the meeting minutes afterwards. Both sides agreed to continue programs under the Protocol and promote international cooperation of clean energy technology for the good of the people.


A number of delegates from both countries attended the meeting, including Mr. Ma Linying, Deputy Director General of the Department of International Cooperation, Mr. Gu Jun, Deputy Director General of the International Cooperation Department of National Energy Administration, Mr. Zhang Xiaolu, Senior Consultant of China Power Investment Corporation, as well as representatives from Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Meteorological Bureau, China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, ENN and US national labs and enterprises concerned.
