On 14 February 2017, Professor Mauro Giacca, Director-General of the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), visited the Ministry of Science and Technology. Deputy Director-General Chen Linhao of the Department of International Cooperation had an in-depth discussion with the ICGEB delegation on such issues as scholarship program, R&D project, and technological and industrial cooperation.
DDG Chen Linhao briefed DG Mauro Giacca on the arrangement of biotechnology in China’s 13th Five-Year Plan for Science, Technology and Innovation, funding schemes following the management reform of the science and technology programs and cases of China’s cooperation with other international organizations or multilateral mechanisms.
DG Mauro Giacca talked about the status quo of ICGEB and its future plan. The two sides discussed the three-step plan for advancing China-ICGEB cooperation, including the establishment of scholarship, joint laboratories and regional centers as well as the development of ICGEB China Office under appropriate circumstances.
The ICGEB delegation also visited research institutions, companies, high-tech parks, and bio-industry clusters in China, exploring opportunities of cooperation in biotechnology and industry.
Established in 1983 with the support of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, ICGEB is an intergovernmental international sci-tech organization. Every year, ICGEB receives project applications on biotechnology-related sci-tech cooperation, professional training and academic exchange for the purpose of promoting cooperation and exchanges between developed and developing countries in genetic engineering and biotechnology.
