The Eighth Meeting of the China-Portugal Joint Commission on Science and Technology Cooperation was held in Lisbon on December 14, 2017. The meeting was jointly chaired by Director-General Ye Dongbai of the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and President Paulo Ferrão of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal.
The two sides briefed on science and technology innovation and developments in their countries, reviewed their progress in cooperation in the fields of environment, energy, space and marine science since the Seventh Commission meeting, and exchanged views on the joint funding mechanism for inter-governmental joint research projects for the 2019-2021 period and on the implementation of the Protocol on Research and Innovation Cooperation in the Field of Marine Science signed by the authorities for science and technology of the two countries.
The two sides expressed satisfaction with their cooperation in the joint funding of intergovernmental joint research projects over the 2016-2018 period and agreed to continue to consolidate the mechanism of Joint Commission on Science and Technology Cooperation and coordinate science and technology innovation resources of both countries; continue to hold consultations on the next phase of joint sponsorship of intergovernmental joint research projects, and step up support for cooperation in priority areas; continuously promote the construction of China-Portugal Joint Innovation Center for Advanced Materials, and speed up building of joint research center in the marine field; promote universities, research institutions and enterprises of both countries in establishing long-term, sustainable, mutually beneficial and friendly relations and carrying out innovation cooperation in research and development.

At the meeting, the two sides also signed the Minutes of the Eighth Meeting of the China-Portugal Joint Commission on Science and Technology Cooperation.
